SUMMER CAMP JOBS

What is summer camp all about?  THE CAMPERS!  Who makes summer camp great?  THE STAFF!

What do we look for in a staff member?
Working at YMCA Hayo-Went-Ha Camps is a challenging but incredible rewarding job.  Patience, maturity, and a desire to work with kids in a great outdoors is essential.  We expect our staff to be great role models and mentors for our campers.  A Hayo-Went-Ha Camps staff person's most important job is to live the YMCA's four core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility, as well as our motto "Each for all, all for each," at all times.

Hayo-Went-Ha Camps place a great deal of emphasis on the relationships that develop between leader and camper, and among the campers themselves.  Staff is carefully chosen for their commitment to the growth of the camper, enthusiasm, experience, interpersonal skills, and their ability to engage, have fun and forge friendships!

How do we operate?
YMCA Hayo-Went-Ha Camps have over 200 combined years of camping tradition.  Our ratio of four campers per counselor gives our staff the opportunity to create close bonds with their campers.  Additionally, we strive to assign an international counselor to every cabin to broaden international understanding and increase cultural sensitivity.

Our wilderness adventure program offers campers an appropriate wilderness challenge for their age.   Staff are chosen for each trip based on their interest, experience, and qualifications.  Cabin groups consist of two staff and 8 campers and they venture to many state and national parks across Michigan and southern Ontario in Canada.  Staff will be trained in all aspects of our trip program during staff training.

At camp and on trips, safety is of the utmost importance.  Staff will be trained in wilderness first aid , lifeguarding, and CPR.  Adventure activities, including swimming, horseback riding, sailing, archery/riflery, and the ropes course, are all run by accomplished specialists.

What positions do we offer?
Cabin Counselor
Counselors must be at least 18 years old.  17 year old high school graduates are also eligible.  Cabin counselors are role models and provide daily care of the campers and create the best summer every by facilitating team building, supporting personal growth, supervising adventure trips, teaching activities, and establishing lifelong friendships.

Program Staff
Program staff must be at least 18 years old.  These staff include the arts and crafts director, the ropes course director, the waterfront director, sailing director, and riflery/archery director.  We also employ a photographer at each camp to capture memories and document the best summer ever.

When do we need you?
A summer position begins in late May/early June.  Prior to the arrival of our campers, staff participate in staff training and development.  This includes becoming  certified in lifeguarding, CPR, and wilderness first aid, and learning about program areas, safety, child development, trip equipment, leadership, camper oversight, how to handle emergencies, and daily schedules.

We also offer outdoor education positions beginning as early as March and continuing for several months after the summer season.  These positions work with students from area schools who come to YMCA Hayo-Went-Ha Camps during  the non-summer months, teaching environmental education and facilitating adventure programs.

Returning staff and leadership positions will be hired by January 8th  Applications for new staff are open by December 1st and will be responded to promptly.  Interviews are scheduled on a rolling basis and positions do fill up quickly so apply early!
