Canoe Canada's Wilderness

EXPLORER PROGRAM

As explorers, campers embark on a fourteen day canoeing adventure in Killarney Provincial Park, deep in the Canadian wilderness just south of Sudbury, Ontario.  The remote nature of the park provides beautiful scenery of tall pines and clear lakes as these campers learn about true wilderness expeditionary travel.  These young women will travel by canoe through lakes and rivers, and portage their boats on foot to avoid waterfalls and other obstacles along the way.  The group will start and finish their adventure at Widgewa Lodge on the western edge of the park and travel through chains of interconnected lakes and rivers, portaging where necessary and camping on rocky granite shorelines.  This trip will challenge campers as they learn new backcountry skills and come together as a functioning team.  A few highlights of the experience include a hike up to Silver Peak to enjoy spectacular 360° views of the park, and a dip in crystal clear Lake Topaz after a long portage.  The first week of camp will include a canoe orientation and training of Lake Arbutus with our canoe expert.  While in camp, the girls will get to participate in all of the fun on-site challenges and activities offered.

TRIP LOCATION

Killarney Provincial Park is located on the northern shore of the Georgian Bay in Lake Huron, due east of Michigan's Upper Peninsula in Ontario.  For more information about the location of the trip, check out the Killarney Provincial Park website.

STAFF TESTIMONIAL

Exploring Killarney is challenging, breathtaking, occasionally frustrating, exhilarating.  The two weeks spent in the wilderness there seem timeless, and it is nearly impossible to describe Killarney's iconic beauty.  The water is an unusual teal blue, surrounded by sunlit quartzite cliffs.  More than anything, though, Killarney is a trip where both campers and staff are pushed to become stronger.  A cabin in Killarney loses track of the "real world" and instead begins to deeply understand not only what is important for success on a wilderness trip, but also how important it is to recognize the beauty in each other and around us.
